About FuneralCosts
An independent guide to what a funeral costs in South Africa, and how to arrange one without being overcharged in the worst week of your life.
When someone dies, the family often has days, not weeks, to arrange and pay for a funeral, and almost no way to tell whether a quote is fair. Prices are rarely published, packages are bundled to look cheaper than they are, and grief is a poor time to negotiate. We built FuneralCosts to fix the information gap: to show what things actually cost before you are quoted, so a family can walk into a parlour knowing the numbers.
The site does two things. It publishes real South African price ranges for burials, cremations and tombstones, with the figures sourced and dated. And it lists funeral parlours across all nine provinces, searchable by city and suburb, with phone numbers so you can contact them directly. On top of that sit plain-English guides to funeral cover and the practical steps to take when someone dies.
We are a small South African team. Directory information is compiled from public sources and then checked; the way listings are handled is described in how we list parlours. The guides are written and reviewed by hand. If we have something wrong, we want to hear about it and fix it.
What we stand for
Independent
We don't own funeral parlours and we don't sell policies. A parlour's place in the directory is not for sale, and our funeral cover guides never rank an insurer higher for money.
Free to use
No sign-up, and no lead form standing between you and a parlour's phone number. You contact parlours directly. We never sell your details.
Honest about money
The site is funded by advertising and clearly labelled affiliate links. Those links never change our price figures or which parlours we list.
Sourced and dated
Cost ranges come from published industry research, with sources cited on the price pages. Rules and prices change, so we point you to the official source for anything you must not get wrong.
